California Makes History: Diwali Declared an Official State Holiday

Sacramento: In a landmark decision celebrating cultural diversity and inclusion, California has officially declared Diwali a state holiday, creating history in the United States. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill (AB) 268 into law, placing Diwali—the Festival of Lights—on the state’s list of public holidays.

Under this law, state government employees, community colleges, and public schools will now be allowed a paid holiday on Diwali. Educational institutions can also organize special programs on the cultural and social significance of the festival, promoting awareness and unity.

What AB 268 Means

  • Paid leave for state employees on Diwali

  • Schools and colleges may remain closed

  • Institutions can host cultural events to teach the meaning of Diwali

Joy in the Indian-American Community

The decision has brought immense pride and happiness to the 1 million+ South Asian residents in California, especially the Indian diaspora. Ajay Bhutoria, entrepreneur and former advisor to President Joe Biden, praised the move, calling it “a celebration of light, unity, and diversity.”

He thanked Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, and Darshan Patel for championing the bill and highlighted that this step honors the contributions and heritage of Indian-Americans—from Silicon Valley tech leaders to healthcare professionals in Southern California.

“More Than a Holiday, A Milestone”

Bhutoria noted, “Diwali symbolizes the triumph of hope over despair and knowledge over ignorance. This recognition is not just a holiday, but a tribute to the legacy and impact of the diaspora.”

As California prepares to celebrate Diwali on October 20, this historic decision is expected to inspire other states across the U.S. and serve as a beacon of inclusion, pride, and progress.
